Cahill targets second place with Chelsea

Gary Cahill believes Chelsea can overtake Manchester City and finish second in the Premier League this season, ESPN has reported.

Gary Cahill

Chelsea, currently third, play league champions City on Sunday with the sides separated by four points. Rafael Benitez’s side have won their last three games - in three different competitions - while City have stuttered in the league, losing to Southampton and allowed Manchester United to build up a 12-point lead at the top of the table.

While Cahill was focused on Chelsea’s Europa League meeting with Sparta Prague on Thursday evening - the Blues lead 1-0 from the away leg - he confirmed that the players felt that second place was within their reach and a victory over City would spur them on to climb the table.

Cahill said: “We've a huge game [Thursday] night, then a massive game on Sunday. If we get a positive result on Sunday, it opens that right back up, so one game at a time. It's going to be a tough game away from home. But if we do get a positive result, second place is in touching distance for us.

The former Bolton Wanderers defender joined Chelsea in January 2012 after four years at the Reebok Stadium. In his first season at Stamford Bridge Cahill won the FA Cup and the Champions League, but Chelsea only finished sixth in the table. Thus far he has made 54 appearances for the Blues, scoring eight goals.
