Tottenham striker Defoe facing longer spell on the sidelines

Thursday 21 February 2013

The Independent has reported that Jermain Defoe’s absence at Tottenham Hotspur due to injury looks like it will be for a lengthier period than originally expected.

Jermain Defoe is helped off the pitch at West Brom

The 30-year-old suffered ankle ligament damage in the 1-0 away victory at West Brom at the beginning of February.

Initial scans suggested the England hitman would be out of action for upto three weeks. However, he hasn’t yet resumed full training, and looks almost certain to miss out on a return to his former club West Ham on Monday night.

Defoe hopes to be in contention for the north London derby at the start of next month, but unless he makes a quick recovery, this target looks in some doubt as well.

Meanwhile, manager Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed Brad Friedel will start in goal on Thursday night in their Europa League second leg tie with Lyon, despite former Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris being on the books.

Gareth Bale’s two-goal performance in the first leg means Villas-Boas’ side head to the Stade de Gerland with a 2-1 advantage.
