Brendan Rodgers has called on his Liverpool players to get past the disappointment of losing in the Europa League to Zenit St Petersburg and focus on a strong end to their Premier League campaign, the BBC has reported.

Liverpool beat Zenit 3-1 at Anfield on Thursday evening but lost the tie 3-3 on aggregate, going out on the away goal rule. Zenit took the lead after a Jamie Carragher error but Liverpool hit back, scoring three goals and coming close to getting the match-winning fourth in a stirring display.

Rodgers insisted that he was proud of the performance of his players despite the Reds being knocked out of the last competition that could have delivered silverware in his first season at the club.

We had a lot to do at 2-0, and then we go 3-0 down in the tie,” Rodgers said. “Many teams would have given up but for us it was a great night in terms of the performance and the result.

It was a very proud night to be manager of the club. It is for nights like that that I came here. I thought the players were phenomenal and they gave a monumental performance. The supporters united behind them and we were fractions away from a monumental result,” he added.

Liverpool are currently seventh in the league table, five points short of a place in next season’s Europa League and nine adrift of the Champions League positions, having been knocked out of the FA Cup by League One side Oldham Athletic, and of the League Cup by Rodgers’ former employers Swansea City, who play Bradford City in the final on Sunday.

Rodgers continued: “There are 11 games to go and we want to finish as high up the league as we can, keep the improvement going and keep the progression going. We do not stop until the whistle blows against Queens Park Rangers in our final league game.
