Real Madrid line up Man Utd goalkeeper De Gea as Casillas replacement

Real Madrid want to take Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea back to Spain as a replacement for captain Iker Casillas, the Daily Mirror has reported.

De Gea is around 10 years younger than Casillas and is viewed by the Madrid hierarchy as the player to assume the role of Casillas in the long-term. Casillas, 31, is currently missing from action because of a hand injury, while De Gea, 22, has at times struggled with the physical side of football in England.

United paid £17m to sign De Gea from Real’s city rivals Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2010. De Gea has at times, however, been criticised for making mistakes, although he impressed at the Santiago Bernabeu during the 1-1 draw between United and Madrid earlier this month, including one startling - and unorthodox - save De Gea made with his legs.

Madrid’s move for De Gea is not said to be dependent on the future of Jose Mourinho, while United have been linked with a summer move for Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic, with the Potters having signed England international Jack Butland in January.
