The Daily Mail has reported that Roberto Mancini has been told he must streamline his Manchester City squad this summer if he wants to sign a striker, with Edinson Cavani a target, and a central midfielder - with Everton’s Marouane Fellaini in his sights.

Among the names set to leave the Etihad Stadium are Edin Dzeko, Joleon Lescott, Maicon and Scott Sinclair, the Mail claims, while Gareth Barry, Javi Garcia, Aleksandar Kolarov and Samir Nasri are also under consideration for a summer exit. Definitely leaving City will be Roque Santa Cruz, Wayne Bridge and Kolo Toure, whose contracts are all due to expire, saving City in the region of £15m per season.

City executives Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain are spearheading the cost-cutting as City attempt to come to terms with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules, and also to free up funds for Mancini to improve the squad at the end of the season. The current Premier League champions are 12 points behind Manchester United as things stand.

Cavani has a release clause in his Napoli contract of £52m and is said to be City’s No. 1 target, while Mancini is also desirous of a hard-working midfielder. Fellaini is among the names being discussed, the newspaper adds, and City would offer striker John Guidetti to the Toffees in return. Victor Wanyama, the Celtic midfielder, is another player City are monitoring.
