Manchester City are planning a £40million summer swoop for Edinson Cavani after admitting defeat in their pursuit of Radamel Falcao, according to the Telegraph.

Edinson Cavani

Atletico Madrid striker Falcao is Europe's most sought after striker, having scored 25 goals for the Spanish club this season.

But City believe the Colombian is destined to join Chelsea or Real Madrid - meaning they have upped their interest in Napoli forward Cavani.

The Uruguayan's potential arrival is likely to be part of a major summer restructure for Roberto Mancini's side, who lag behind in the Premier League title race and exited the Champions League at the group stage this season.

Striker Edin Dzeko is set to leave the club, along with out-of-favour defender Joleon Lescott, who could secure a return to Everton.

City had planned to bring in Brazilian wonderkid Neymar but they also face losing out on the Santos forward as Barcelona appear to be poised to secure his signature.

Cavani, 26, has found the net 18 times in Serie A so far this season.
