Liverpool's Skrtel unhappy with Rodgers' explanation over why he was dropped
Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has questioned the honesty of manager Brendan Rodgers after revealing he is not sure Rodgers has given him the real reason for why he has been out of the starting XI of late, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
Skrtel was dropped after a poor performance in the FA Cup at Oldham Athletic, one of a series of sub-par displays, the newspaper suggests. Jamie Carragher came into the side in Skrtel’s place and Rodgers has spoken of the need to bring more leadership into the side.
However, Skrtel does not agree with Rodgers’ assessment of his recent displays, leading the centre-back to claim there is other motivation at work. “He gave me some explanation, but it’s hard to tell if it was the true reason he gave me,” said Skrtel. “I don’t think it was and think there is something else behind it.”
Skrtel also suggested that if he is not restored to the first team in the near future, he will have to reconsider his commitment to the club. The Slovakian signed a long-term contract last summer but hinted he will move on if he is not an automatic choice, with clubs in Russia monitoring the situation.
Russia is a country Skrtel knows well, having played for Zenit St Petersburg before joining Liverpool in 2008. Skrtel added that he does not want to cause trouble for Rodgers by complaining too loudly, but will look to move on if he is not returned to the team once he has recovered from injury.
