Brighton & Hove Albion boss Gus Poyet has admitted that he would be keen to take over at Chelsea, should he be offered the managerial position by Roman Abramovich.

Metro reports the Uruguayan’s desire to succeed Rafa Benitez at the end of the season, but he is behind David Moyes and former Blues boss Jose Mourinho in the bookmakers’ race.

Benitez confirmed his departure at the season’s end on Wednesday, when he blasted the supporters and the Chelsea board for his ‘interim’ status following a 2-0 FA Cup fifth round victory at Middlesbrough.

Poyet said: “That is my aim, everyone knows and I don’t hide it.

“I want to go to the highest level and if it is in the Premier League with Chelsea then fantastic, if it is with someone else, then we shall see.”

The 45-year-old took over at Brighton in November 2009, and won the League One title with the Seagulls in 2011.

He has since guided them into the top six of the Championship, playing an open and expansive brand of football which would endear himself to Abramovich.

Poyet scored 36 goals in 105 league appearances with Chelsea between 1997 and 2001, becoming a cult hero in west London in the process. He also won 26 international caps for Uruguay.
