Williams on Arsenal’s radar

Arsenal have joined the battle to acquire the services of Swansea City skipper Ashley Williams, according to the Guardian.

Ashley Williams

Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Tottenham was the final straw for Arsene Wenger, who wants to bring in a leader at the back, after a lack of consistent performances from Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

Williams led Swansea to their first major silverware in the League Cup last month, and has become an integral part of both club and international setups.

The 28-year-old succeeded Aaron Ramsey as captain of Wales in October, and has had great success at Swansea since joining the Welsh side from Stockport County in 2008.

The Gunners are poised to make an £8m offer, but they face competition from Liverpool, with Brendan Rodgers earmarking Williams out as a replacement for the retiring Jamie Carragher.

Williams started his playing career at non-league Hednesford Town, and has made over 200 league appearances for the Swans.

He signed a three-year contract at his current club as recently as October.
