Barcelona line up move for Liverpool defender Agger

Liverpool face a battle to keep Daniel Agger away from Barcelona after the Denmark international was earmarked as the replacement for Carles Puyol, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Daniel Agger

Puyol is 34 and entering the latter stages of his career, with the Catalan club said to be preparing for the future by lining up a younger player to take the captain’s place. The 28-year-old Agger is understood to be at the top of Barcelona’s wanted list.

The Mirror adds that Barcelona’s interest in Agger only adds to the defensive worries of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers was already likely to lose up to as many as three of his central defenders this summer, with Jamie Carragher the only confirmed departure as he retires.

Martin Skrtel has however been linked with a return to Zenit St Petersburg after falling out of favour under Rodgers, while Uruguayan centre-back Sebastian Coates has struggle to adapt to English football and could move closer to home.

Agger has been at Liverpool since January 2006, moving from Brondby in his native Denmark. He has since played more than 200 times for the Reds, scoring 11 goals, and winning the FA Cup in 2006 and the League Cup in 2012.
