Man City unlikely to offer Rooney way out of Man Utd

Manchester City will not try to sign Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney for a second time despite the England international appearing to be on the verge of leaving the Premier League leaders, the Guardian has reported.

Rooney was dropped for United’s Champions League defeat against Real Madrid on Tuesday, sparking off intense speculation that he is bound for the Old Trafford exit this summer.

City first tried to prise Rooney away from the other side of Manchester in late 2010, when Rooney handed in a transfer request and claimed United lacked ambition. He later withdrew his request, apologised and signed a new, long-term contract at United.

It is the size of that contract that is said by the Guardian to put off City, who are wary of meeting UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations. Rooney is paid a total of around £300,000 per week, the newspaper claims, a sum that includes not just base pay but bonuses and add-ons. City would have to create a large gap in their wage budget to afford Rooney.

City and United are currently fighting it out at the top of the Premier League table, with Rooney helping United to establish as 12-point lead over the defending champions. City won the title last season on the last day of the campaign, scoring in the final seconds to overtake United on goal difference. A Rooney goal had seen United beat Sunderland to almost claim the prize.
