Jermain Defoe believes the Tottenham Hotspur side at the disposal of Andre Villas-Boas is the best he has ever seen at White Hart Lane, ESPN has reported.

Defoe hailed the quality of players the Head Coach has in his squad and praised Villas-Boas for having faith in him and using him as the team’s main striker, having struggled to hold down a place in the team last season under former manager Harry Redknapp.

Now in his second spell at White Hart Lane, Defoe said: “ "I have to say I think this is the best squad since I've been here. I was having a joke with Scott Parker yesterday and I was saying that sometimes when you have a knock and you can't train, you just have to try and stay on it.

If you are injured, someone else will come in and do well because this is such a good team to play in now. To stay in this team, you have to play well and take your chance and everyone is buzzing at the minute.” Defoe also spoke highly of the spirit around training among the players, citing that too as the best he has ever known it at Spurs.

Defoe first joined Tottenham from West Ham in 2004, spending three-and-a-half years at White Hart Lane before moving to Portsmouth, having fallen out of favour at Spurs. He spent a year at Fratton Park, returning to Tottenham in January 2009, scoring 132 goals for Tottenham in his two spells at the club.
