The Daily Mirror has reported that the futures of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko and Robert Lewandowski, the Borussia Dortmund forward, are intertwined in what will be a long-running summer transfer saga.

Dzeko, according to the newspaper, is in talks with Dortmund over a summer move as the Bundesliga club expect to lose Lewandowski to United. Rooney would then be allowed to leave Old Trafford - although there is no guarantee United will get the price they are seeking.

The Mirror claims Dzeko will move to Dortmund for £20m, with Lewandowski leaving for United for £18m, and United wanting £35m for Rooney but perhaps having to settle for £25m, with City, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea said to be the interested parties.

Rooney was left on the bench for United’s Champions League loss to Real Madrid on Tuesday, with reports later suggesting Sir Alex Ferguson was willing to let Rooney leave the club this summer. Rooney, 27, has two years remaining on his United contract.
