Tottenham boss Villas-Boas at ease with Bale booking

Friday 08 March 2013

Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas is not concerned by the yellow card Gareth Bale received for diving that rules him out of the Europa League second leg meeting with Inter, as ESPN reports the Portuguese believes it is better that Bale misses that match then a more important fixture later in the competition.

Gareth Bale is booked

Bale scored to help Tottenham establish a three-goal first leg lead over the Serie A side, but was then booked by referee Antonio Mateu for going down in the penalty area under a challenge from midfielder Walter Gargano. ESPN notes it is Bale’s sixth yellow card for simulation since December 2011.

However, with Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen adding to Bale’s opener Spurs are in a commanding position ahead of the return bout next week, and Villas-Boas suggested Bale’s yellow is in fact well-timed.

Gareth will obviously be a great miss,” Villas-Boas said. “But had we known we'd get this result we would have asked him to get the yellow card to be clean and to be ready for the last eight.

"It's not finished but we are in a good position. Gareth has been influential in consecutive games but hopefully we can make it without him and go through to the last eight.”
