Ferguson insists Rooney has Man Utd future
Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken for the first time since Tuesday’s night agonising Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid, telling journalists, including those from BBC Sport, that Wayne Rooney will not be leaving Manchester United in the summer.
The 27-year-old was dropped for the match against Madrid, at the expense of Danny Welbeck. Ferguson though has insisted it was only for tactical reasons and nothing more.
He also rubbished stories of a departure for the England striker, and revealed he has banned two national newspapers from his press conferences for running untruthful stories about Rooney, believed to be the Independent and the Daily Mail.
Ferguson said: “There is no issue between myself and Wayne Rooney. To suggest we don’t talk is nonsense. He understood the reasons completely. Tactically we got it right. We don’t always but we did then. He’ll be here next year. You can have my word on that.”
Ferguson also spoke about the Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir’s decision to send Luis Nani off in the 56th minute, the moment when the tie turned in favour of the visitors.
He carried on by saying: “It is hard to keep your faith when you have things like that, but in the cold light of day, we have to get on with it. Nothing can be done. This is another day in the history of our club - not a good day, but a day.”
Ferguson didn’t speak to any media outlets after the Old Trafford defeat, and is likely to face some form of disciplinary action from UEFA for not attending the post-match press conference.
