Man City join race for Maher

Manchester City have joined Premier League rivals Arsenal in the race for AZ Alkmaar’s young midfielder Adam Maher, The Daily Mail reports.

Adam Maher

The Dutch international is valued at £10m and expects to leave Holland at the end of the season to further his reputation in one of the bigger European leagues. City director of football Txiki Begiristain held talks with the playmaker and invited him to the Etihad Stadium to sample life with the reigning Premier League champions. Maher has impressed in the Eredivisie and attracted interested from Tottenham earlier this season, who scouted him on international duty.

Maher had been earmarked as a potential replacement for Samir Nasri, who Roberto Mancini accused of giving only 50% in a recent interview. The Frenchman is ready to prove his manager wrong and fight for his place in Manchester, with his agent Jean-Pierre Bernes urging Nasri to show his best form. Nasri is contracted with City until 2015 and reported interest from Inter Milan has sparked rumours over Nasri’s exit, something Bernes believes will not happen.

“Look at Ribery – a few years ago, everyone wanted to throw him away. Nowadays, Franck is the French team and Bayern star because he worked hard and that is the way which Samir has to follow. He knows it and he will fight”, Bernes stated.
