Carra puts Suarez ahead of Bale

Sunday 10 March 2013

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has outlined why he believes Luis Suarez would win the Player of the Year award over Tottenham winger Gareth Bale, liverpoolfc.com reports.

Sunday’s clash at Anfield sees third placed Spurs travel to seventh placed Liverpool, with the away side looking to strengthen their grip on the Champions League spots with a victory. The Reds have recovered from an early season slump to improve their form vastly and are looking to get into the Europa League positions by the end of the season. Bale and Suarez will be on show at the same time, with both battling with Manchester United striker Robin van Persie for Player of the Year.

Carragher admits that while he has magnificent respect for Bale, Suarez would be his choice for the title. The Uruguayan’s hat-trick away at Wigan last weekend took his goals tally to 21 for the season in the Premier League and Carragher revealed he would not swap him for any player in England’s top-flight.

“I would go with Luis. He’s the top scorer in the league. I would not swap him for any player in the Premier League. Luis hasn’t proved anything to me this season. I knew what he was capable of. You’ve got to base it on performances. He’s been brilliant for us”, Carragher said.
