Bayern admit long-term interest in Arsenal boss Wenger
Bayern Munich have admitted they have tried to tempt Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to the Bundesliga on numerous occasions, but the Frenchman has resisted their approaches.
Wenger left AS Monaco in 1994, but chose to go to Japan, managing Grampus Eight, instead of accepting the advances of Bayern President Uli Hoeness - Wenger again turned down their offers when he joined Arsenal two years later.
“We were very surprised. From Japan he went to Arsenal and over the years, whenever we were looking for a new coach, Wenger was always one we considered," Hoeness told The Sun.
“He’s a very serious person, very strong and has a very good idea about the game. There have been a few moments where we have discussed his name over the years.
“He has always remained loyal to Arsenal which is fantastic behaviour. But it is true we wanted him at Bayern a few times.”
Bayern will appoint former Barcelona boss Josep Guardiola at the end of the season, replacing current incumbent Jupp Heynkes.
The Spaniard will have to hit the ground running to keep up the high standards at the Allianz Arena, with the club top of the Bundesliga by 20 points, and with a 3-1 advantage going into the second leg of the Champions League tie against Arsenal on Wednesday.
