Arsenal to be without Wilshere for Bayern Munich Champions League tie

Arsenal are facing the prospect of having to turn around a 3-1 Champions League first-leg deficit against Bayern Munich, at the Allianz Arena, without talismanic midfielder Jack Wilshere, who the Daily Mirror claims is struggling to recover from an ankle injury.

Wilshere suffered the injury in the North London derby defeat to Tottenham Hotspur more than a week ago, and despite time spent resting in Dubai has been unable to regain full fitness. The Mirror adds that he is likely to be fit to play Swansea City in the Premier League at the weekend.

Arsenal will also be without Bacary Sagna and Lukas Podolski, with former Bayern forward Podolski also missing through an ankle complaint while a knee problem has forced Sagna out of both the Champions League fixture and the weekend’s league match against the Swans.

There is potentially some better injury news for manager Arsene Wenger, however, as Kieran Gibbs is hopeful of returning to action after a thigh injury. Thomas Vermaelen will play at left-back if Gibbs misses out, while Carl Jenkinson will deputise for Sagna at right-back. Lukasz Fabianski is expected to replace Wojciech Szczesny in goal.

The first meeting this season between the sides saw Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller give the Bundesliga leaders a quick two-goal advantage, only for Podolski to pull a goal back shortly after half-time. Bayern striker Mario Mandzukic added a late third for the Bavarians.
