Manchester City defender Micah Richards hopes to return to action by the end of March after missing the last four months of the season with a knee injury, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Richards is targeting the home fixture against Newcastle on March 30 as the date of his first taste of senior football since suffering the injury against Swansea City in October. Richards returned to training at the start of the month after undergoing surgery on the problem.

The Telegraph notes that Richards originally hoped to return in time to play Leeds, his hometown club, in the FA Cup, but when that target proved too soon a slower, more gradual recovery programme was implemented. Having also suffered an ankle injury while with Team GB during last year’s London Olympics, Richards has made only four appearances for City this season.

Richards made his City debut in October 2005 as a substitute against Arsenal, starting his first match in February 2006 against Charlton Athletic. He has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for City, scoring 10 goals, and winning the FA Cup in 2011 and the Premier League title in 2012, as well as 13 senior England caps.
