Brendan Rodgers is targeting four players to bring to Liverpool this summer, but insists it is the ability of the players and not the number of new arrivals that is the key, according to the Daily Mirror.

Liverpool bought Chelsea and England forward Daniel Sturridge and Inter’s Brazil midfielder Philippe Coutinho in the January transfer window, the new signings helping Rodgers’ team to a turnaround in form that has made the Reds the third-best team in the Premier League over the last 15 games.

Rodgers is hoping for a similar impact from his summer purchases, stressing that they need to be of a similar standard to maintain the upturn in momentum that has taken Liverpool from 12th earlier in the season to fifth with less than 10 games to play.

It is quality we are after now, not quantity,” Rodgers said. “ We see the impact of Coutinho, and Sturridge’s quality, in January. That’s what we’re looking for. If we bring in another three or four players of that quality, add that to what we have got, then we have got a strong squad that can compete.

Since moving from Stamford Bridge to Anfield, Sturridge has scored five goals in eight games, having scored only twice all season for Chelsea, while Coutinho opened his account against Rodgers’ former side Swansea City and particularly impressed against Wigan Athletic.
