Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has hailed the influence of January signing Philippe Coutinho at Anfield, describing the Brazilian as “magical”, according to the Daily Mail.

Coutinho moved to Liverpool from Inter for an £8.5m fee, making four appearances thus far, creating two goals and scoring one himself, although he has yet to complete a full 90 minutes in any of his three starts for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Gerrard however praised the qualities the 20-year-old brings to the side, and believes that when Coutinho is up to full fitness - and is used to the pace and intensity of the Premier League - Liverpool will have a potent weapon at their disposal.

He's got moments of magical brilliance,” Gerrard said. “I think you'll see the best of him next season when he gets a full pre-season under his belt and gets used to the speed of the game.

What he has shown for 55 or 60 minutes is that he's a top player and he belongs in a Liverpool shirt. If we can get that for 90 minutes from him next season then he's going to be a great asset for us.

Gerrard’s praise was echoed by Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique, who commended Coutinho for his ability in one-on-one situations.

Coutinho began he career with Brazilian club Vasco da Gama, moving to Inter in 2010 and spending the second half of last season on loan in La Liga with Espanyol.
