Man Utd goalkeeper De Gea called up by Spain

Manchester United first choice David De Gea has a chance to impress on the international stage, after earning a call-up to Vicente del Bosque’s Spanish squad for the upcoming international period.

David De Gea

According to Goal.com, the 22-year-old could make his debut for the national side in World Cup qualifying games against Finland in Gijon, or in Paris when the reigning world champions head to France.

Spain currently sit joint top of Group I alongside Les Bleus, with seven points from three matches.

De Gea has shaken off scrutiny that was present throughout his debut season at Old Trafford, and has put in some eye-catching performances of late - the most recent coming last weekend when a string of top saves denied Chelsea from completing a dramatic comeback in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

With Iker Casillas injured, De Gea will compete with Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina of Liverpool for the No. 1 goalkeeping berth. However, there is no place in Del Bosque’s squad for Javi Martinez, Fernando Llorente or misfiring Chelsea striker Fernando Torres.

Spain squad for World Cup qualifiers against Finland and France:

Goalkeepers: Pepe Reina, Victor Valdes, David de Gea

Defenders: Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba, Alvaro Arbeloa, Nacho Monreal, Cesar Azpilicueta, Raul Albiol

Midfielders: Andres Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, Xavi Hernandez, David Silva, Cesc Fabregas, Santi Cazorla, Jesus Navas, Sergio Busquets, Isco , Javi Garcia, Juan Mata

Forwards: David Villa, Pedro Rodriguez, Alvaro Negredo
