Newcastle boss Pardew angry after McManaman tackle goes unpunished
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew could barely hide his anger after a tackle from Wigan forward Callum McManaman saw Massadio Haidara stretched off but wasn’t punished with so much as a free-kick, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
Haidara had only entered the match - which ended in a 2-1 victory for the Latics - as a substitute for Mathieu Debuchy, who left the game early with an injury. The Telegraph adds that the referee, Mark Halsey, did give a free-kick against McManaman, but only for handball.
McManaman was confronted at half-time by Newcastle assistant manager John Carver, which led to angry scenes on the touchline as Wigan coach Graham Barrow came to the aid of the 21-year-old, who was making his first Premier League start. McManaman could face retrospective action from the Football Association, potentially ruling him out of Wigan’s FA Cup semi-final against Millwall.
Goals from Jean Beausejour and Arouna Kone gave Wigan the three points, with Newcastle’s effort coming from full-back Davide Santon. Kone’s goal was scored late in the contest and raised the ire of Pardew further after it appeared Maynor Figueroa handled the ball before Kone converted.
