Liverpool missed Carragher in Southampton defeat, admits Rodgers
Brendan Rodgers believes the absence of Jamie Carragher was a key reason why Liverpool fell to defeat against Premier League strugglers Southampton, according to the Daily Mirror.
Liverpool had won their four previous league games but with Carragher ruled out because of a cut to his shin, Rodgers instead fielded a centre-back partnership of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger - with Southampton scoring twice in the first-half, and, according to the Mirror, having enough opportunities to score four more times. The match eventually finished 3-1 to the Saints.
The 35-year-old Carragher is due to retire at the end of the season, and Rodgers pinned the blame for his side’s lax defending on the team as a whole, rather than just Agger and Skrtel. He said: “For us, it's an area we feel we need to be better in,” adding that he thought there was “no question” the Reds missed the presence of Carragher.
Rodgers continued: “We defend from the front. It's the team. We never defended well as a team so it's unfair to criticise those two [Agger and Skrtel]. They'll be disappointed of course, as defenders, when we concede goals. We've been in a run of late where we either don't concede or we do, two or three.”
“So it was one where our defensive line always starts from the front of the pitch. This is a group, when we lose, we lose together.”
The defeat leaves Liverpool in seventh place in the league table, three points behind Everton, having played a game more than their Merseyside rivals.
