Redknapp considering dropping QPR goalkeeper Cesar

Julio Cesar’s mistakes in Queens Park Rangers’ defeat to fellow Premier League strugglers Aston Villa could cost him his place in Harry Redknapp’s side, the Daily Mail has reported, with former England goalkeeper Robert Green in line to replace the Brazilian.

Both Green and Cesar were signed by former manager Mark Hughes - Green after leaving West Ham, Cesar sold by Inter - and Green started the season as first choice, only to be usurped by Cesar.

Redknapp has occasionally turned to Green over Cesar since replacing Hughes earlier in the season but Green was absent against Villa with a virus. But Cesar failed to make some routine saves and helped Villa to three goals, cancelling out Jermaine Jenas’ effort for the Londoners.

After the match Redknapp was questioned about Cesar’s future as QRP’s first choice and was non-committal, refusing to reveal if Green would have started ahead of Cesar had he been available.

The Mail adds that Redknapp was critical of his side’s defending for Villa’s first goal, while Cesar should have saved Andreas Weimann’s second - and the manager’s reaction to Villa’s third was not printed due to its colourful nature.

QPR are bottom of the table with eight games to play, seven points adrift of Aston Villa following their defeat at Villa Park.
