Arsenal improvement down to reliving Tottenham defeat, says Mertesacker

Per Mertesacker has credited a repeat showing of Arsenal’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur as the catalyst for the Gunners recent upturn in form, ESPN has reported.

Arsenal lost 2-1 to their north London rivals at White Hart Lane, simultaneously damaging their hopes of qualifying for next year’s Champions League and boosting Spurs’ hopes of making the same competition, but since that match Arsene Wenger’s side have beaten both Bayern Munich and Swansea City away from home, scoring twice against each side and not conceding in either game.

Wenger’s team remain four points adrift of Tottenham, in fifth place, but are now four points behind Spurs with a game in hand after Tottenham lost to Liverpool a week ago and Fulham on Sunday.

Mertesacker revealed that seeing where they went wrong against Spurs meant they knew how and where to improve in the matches that followed. The Germany international said: “There was a lot of room for improvement and we saw a lot of things on television.

Sometimes we didn't choose the right direction and we just lacked a bit of defensive work as a unit. We prepared ourselves for Munich and for Swansea and it was much, much better.
