Vidic backs Ferdinand England recall

Nemanja Vidic believes his Manchester United teammate, Rio Ferdinand, is deserving of his recall to the England fold after Roy Hodgson named him in the squad to play San Marino and Montenegro, Sky Sports has reported.

Ferdinand had missed every previous squad named by Hodgson, sitting out Euro 2012 due to what the manager termed “football reasons”, and while United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was surprised at Ferdinand’s inclusion - because of his history of injuries and a question mark over whether or not he can play two games in a few days - Vidic believes the centre-back is well worth his place in Hodgson’s travelling party.

It's good for Rio,” Vidic said. “He deserves the call, he has played well this season and can help the national team. He would have two international games, then when he comes back we have two games in three days in the Premier League and FA Cup. Can he play all of these games? All I can say is that I hope he does well.

Ferdinand’s last England appearance came in June 2011 against Switzerland, while the first of his 81 international caps came against Cameroon in November 1997.
