Appleton sacked by Blackburn

Tuesday 19 March 2013

Blackburn Rovers have sacked manager Michael Appleton after just 15 games and 67 days in charge, BBC Sport has reported.

Michael Appleton

Appleton was the third permanent manager at Ewood Park this season. Steve Kean started the campaign in charge but resigned in September, to be replaced by former Rovers defender Henning Berg.

Berg left the club in December and Appleton was appointed, moving from Blackpool - where he spent only 65 days, replacing Ian Holloway, who left for Crystal Palace. Appleton was previously employed by Portsmouth.

Appleton leaves Blackburn with the Lancashire club four places and four points clear of the relegation zone following a 1-1 draw with local rivals Burnley on Sunday. Appleton guided Rovers to an FA Cup victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium but they were knocked out of the competition by fellow Championship side Millwall at the quarter-final stage.

As well as Appleton, also leaving the club are assistant manager Ashley Westwood, first team coach Darren Moore and head of senior recruitment Luke Dowling.
