Allen to miss rest of Liverpool's season

Tuesday 19 March 2013

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen is set to go under the knife and will miss the rest of the Premier League season, says The Guardian.

Joe Allen against Southampton

Welsh international Allen has been playing through the pain barrier in an attempt to delay surgery, having injured his shoulder in action for Brendan Rodgers' men back in October.

But the Reds and Allen are now ready for an operation to be arranged, with the former Swansea midfielder clearly experiencing pain in the 3-1 defeat to Southampton at the weekend - during which he was substituted at half-time.

He is now likely to be out of action for three months, ruling him out of Liverpool's push for Champions League qualification but giving him a good chance of being fit in time for pre-season.

The injury also forced the 23-year-old to withdraw from the Wales squad to face Scotland and Croatia in a World Cup qualification double-header this week.

Allen, who arrived from the Swans for £15m last summer, has made 29 starts for his club over the course of this campaign, scoring twice.
