Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor has been drafted into the England squad for the World Cup qualifier against San Marino after Gary Cahill was ruled out, says Sky Sports.

Cahill picked up a knee injury in Chelsea's 2-0 win over West Ham United at the weekend and hasn't recovered in time to take part in Friday's match.

That means 27-year-old Taylor could win his first cap for the Three Lions after being called up by England manager Roy Hodgson.

Taylor said: "I am so happy to have received a call-up to the full squad. It's every player's ambition to represent their country.

"If I am lucky enough to be given that chance over the next seven days, it will be one of the proudest moments of my playing career."

Taylor, who won 29 caps at under-21 level, joins fellow central defenders Steven Caulker, Joleon Lescott and Chris Smalling in the England squad, which has been hit by withdrawals.

But Cahill's injury will be assessed ahead of England's second World Cup qualifier of the week on Tuesday and it is hoped he will recover in time to face Montenegro.
