Taylor resolves to give everything for England
Steven Taylor insists he will give England his full commitment after the Newcastle defender called into Roy Hodgson’s squad for the World Cup qualification double-header against San Marino and Montenegro, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Taylor was added to the travelling party after a spate of defensive withdrawals, including Rio Ferdiand, Michael Dawson and Gary Cahill, who is likely to be unavailable for the first match against San Marino but could return to play Montenegro.
It is Taylor’s first senior international experience since being part of a squad to play Germany in 2007, failing to make his debut, but he did formerly captain the England Under-21s. Taylor said he relished the taste of international football he received six years ago and is excited at the prospect of making his national team bow.
“I will run through brick walls to play for my country,” Taylor said. “It would be the proudest moment in my career and if it comes I would be absolutely delighted, over the moon, call it what you want. I will be there, ready. You cannot get any higher than playing for your country.”
The Mirror adds that Taylor has been recognised for his fine form at Newcastle, particularly a commanding performance as the Magpies beat wealthy Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League. Alan Pardew’s team are currently 13th in the Premier League.
