Southall fears for Coleman's Wales job

Wednesday 20 March 2013

Legendary Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall fears for the security of Chris Coleman’s job as Wales manager should they come unstuck on Friday against Scotland, according to BBC Sport.

Chris Coleman

Southall, who won 92 caps for the Welsh during an illustrious playing career, feels Coleman is already under pressure after a disappointing spate of results in the 14 months he has been at the helm. Wales have only won two games from seven since Coleman succeeded Gary Speed after his untimely death in November 2011.

One of those wins was the World Cup qualifier against the Scots in Cardiff in October, but three defeats - including a 6-1 mauling at the hands of Serbia - have left Wales’s hopes of reaching next summer’s World Cup finals all but over. Wales sit fifth in Group A.

The British Isles clash will be Gordon Strachan’s first in competitive charge of the Tartan Army, but while Southall thinks the supporters of Scotland will be patient with Strachan, time is running out for his counterpart in the Welsh dugout.

He said: “Strachan will be given another chance, but I think with ours (defeat) could nail the coffin for the manager. We are really struggling to get people in the door and when you have a player like Gareth Bale I find that hard to understand, so we really need to win this one.
