Reading push the boat out to tempt Poyet from Brighton

Reading are hopeful that the promise of a hefty transfer budget regardless of the club’s Premier League status will be enough to tempt Gus Poyet to quit Brighton and Hove Albion in favour of the Royals, the Daily Mail has reported.

Gus Poyet

Poyet is said to want 24 hours to consider the move, which would see Reading pay Brighton a compensation fee of £2.5m, since Poyet has three years remaining on what the Mail describes as a lucrative contract with the Seagulls.

The former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is understood to be hesitant over the proposed move to the Madejski Stadium, however, with Reading’s top flight status in doubt and Brighton remaining in with a shout of promotion this season via the play-offs. That could see Brighton replace Reading in the Premier League, and Poyet is wary of backing the wrong horse.

Poyet is joined on Reading’s shortlist by former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo, sacked by the Blues in November, and Nigel Adkins, who left Southampton in January. Paulo Di Canio, who resigned his post at Swindon earlier this season, is also said to be on the club’s shortlist to replace Brian McDermott.
