Man Utd winger Nani to learn red card fate
Manchester United winger Luis Nani is waiting anxiously for the conclusion of UEFA’s disciplinary review into his red card in the Champions League against Real Madrid earlier this month.
The 26-year-old was controversially sent off by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir on the hour mark of the second leg tie at Old Trafford for a high challenge on Madrid’s Alvaro Arbeloa.
The Daily Telegraph reports United’s fear that Nani’s automatic one-match ban, which would stand for the dismissal, could be increased to three at the hearing in Nyon.
There will be no representative at the hearing from the Red Devils, but they have written to UEFA with their evidence, stating conclusively that the challenge on Arbeloa was neither intentional nor dangerous.
The player should know his fate by 6pm Thursday evening. Nani is currently preparing for a crucial World Cup qualifier for Portugal on Friday away in Israel.
Meanwhile, the Premier League leaders will be fined for failing to fulfil UEFA’s commitments to the media after the 2-1 defeat 16 days ago.
