Veteran Parker targets England World Cup place
Scott Parker believes age is just a number when it comes to England duty - and wants to be part of the Three Lions squad should they reach next year’s World Cup in Brazil, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Parker’s first taste of international tournament football came at last summer’s European Championships and despite the 32-year-old missing the first half of the new season, he was brought back into the national team fold by manager Roy Hodgson as soon as he proved his fitness with Tottenham Hotspur.
And Parker does not feel that he’ll be too old for international football by the time the World Cup rolls around next summer - indeed, the experience of playing at Euro 2012 has made him more determined than ever to be there.
“The Euros was a massive experience for me. Playing in a big tournament was something I have always wanted to do. It was my first tournament, it came at a late point age-wise in my career but it does keep the fire burning in my stomach and obviously I want to get to Brazil if I can,” Parker said.
He added: “Some people get hung-up, hell-bent on age, asking if players are too old. But if someone’s playing well enough, their best, then you pick them. Of course, I maybe don’t get the age thing because I’m 32! But Ryan Giggs was running more than anybody against Real Madrid the other day, and he’s nearly 40.”
Parker has 17 caps to his name, coming under five different managers with the first, awarded by Sven Goran-Eriksson, won as a substitute for Wayne Rooney in a friendly with Denmark. He was also named England captain by stand-in manager Stuart Pearce for the 3-2 friendly win over the Netherlands in February 2012.
