Gus Poyet has chosen to remain with Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion rather than take on the challenge of keeping Reading in the Premier League, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Poyet met with the Reading hierarchy on Wednesday and asked for a day to make his decision, the newspaper adds, with the Royals said to be confident the Uruguayan would take the position at the Madejski Stadium. However, Poyet has chosen to remain with promotion-chasing Albion, forcing Reading to turn to one of their other options.

The former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is believed to have told Reading that he was confident he could keep them in the top flight but was still turning down the job, despite the offer of a big transfer budget to work with next season regardless of the division the club is in.

Poyet has taken Brighton to seventh in the Championship, outside the top six playoff zone only on goal difference, having also won promotion from League One for the Seagulls.
