Man City v Wigan - Match preview and team news

Wednesday 17 April 2013

Manchester City will attempt to keep up their improved recent form and set a marker down ahead of the FA Cup final between these two sides in May.

Etihad Stadium

After the nadir of City’s 2-0 defeat at Everton that all but sealed the end of their defence of their Premier League title, Roberto Mancini’s men have put on three great showings to defeat Newcastle, Manchester United at Old Trafford and then Chelsea at Wembley in the semi finals of the cup.

There have been suggestions that the league title was still not out of the question but United’s 2-0 victory over Stoke lifted the gap to 15 points once again and with only seven games left to play, even victory over Wigan would surely not reduce the improbability of the task too much.

Mancini looks set to recall Joe Hart to the starting XI after preferring Costel Pantilimon inbetween the sticks for the cup win over Chelsea while David Silva could also return after failing in his bid to prove his fitness for the Sunday date with Wembley.

Edin Dzeko could return to the starting XI but given the goals and performances of Argentine duo Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero in recent matches, the Bosnian faces a tough ask. The match comes too soon however for right-back pair Micah Richards and Maicon.

Wigan could also make a change in goal with on-loan Atletico Madrid keeper Joel Robles battling Ali Al Habsi for the role. Elsewhere however Roberto Martinez has no new fresh injury concerns and so could pick an unchanged starting line-up from the one that overcame Millwall comfortably at Wembley on Saturday, meaning a front three of Arouna Kone, Callum McManaman and Shaun Maloney with Franco Di Santo on the bench.
