Wenger rules out Arsenal return for Song
Arsene Wenger will not bring Barcelona midfielder Alex Song back to Arsenal this summer, the manager insisting that speculation the Gunners have a buyout clause in the transfer agreement is wide of the mark. Wenger also advised his former protégé to give it another year in La Liga, according to Sky Sports.
Song moved to the Nou Camp a year ago but has not featured on a regular basis for the Catalans, making only 23 appearances. But Wenger denied there is a provision for Arsenal to re-sign the Cameroon international, and that even if there was, it would be in Song’s interest to spend more time in Spain before calling it quits.
“There is no buy-back [clause] in his contract,” Wenger said. “He is a quality player and sometimes the players have to insist when it doesn't go well and not change his mind too soon.
“My personal advice for him would be to give it another go and after two seasons he can still make a decision.”
Song spent seven years under Wenger, first signing on loan from Bastia in 2005 before making the move permanent a year later. He had five months on loan at Charlton at the end of the 2006/07 season but could not keep the Addicks in the Premier League, and went on to make more than 200 appearances for Arsenal.
