Bebe reveals Man Utd regret

Bebe, the Manchester United winger currently on loan in Portugal, has revealed he struggled to adapt to the Premier League because he didn’t take life at Old Trafford seriously enough - and he couldn’t develop a bond with Sir Alex Ferguson partly because of the manager’s accent, the Daily Mail has reported.

Ferguson paid more than £7m for Bebe in 2010 but the former Vitoria player never started a Premier League game. He is currently on loan at Rio Ave, having spent time in Turkey with Besiktas last season, and admits he thought that he had made it by simply having joined United.

I never took Manchester United seriously,” Bebe said, “And never understood a word about what Alex Ferguson was saying. I thought: "I’m here, I’m doing well and I don’t have to try hard every day. It was my fault. I was messing around too much".

Bebe did however thank the United staff for doing their best to help him settle at the club, including his Portuguese-speaking teammates. He said: “It was incredible. The people at the club helped me a lot - I learned a lot there. The first week was difficult. I was very nervous and I didn’t speak to anyone. I just wanted to be alone and observe.

Anderson and Nani helped me most, of course, because they speak Portuguese and Patrice Evra. I lived with Anderson for two months. He showed me the club and the city. I will always be grateful for this.

Bebe - who made only seven appearances for United, playing just twice in the league - also believes he could return to the club one day, but added that if he is not going to be part of the first team, he will have to leave on a full-time basis.
