Rodgers does not have full transfer authority at Liverpool, reveals Ayre

The Daily Telegraph says Brendan Rodgers does not have complete authority on Liverpool’s transfer activity.

Brendan Rodgers

That is according to the Reds’ managing director Ian Ayre, who has claimed a committee decides who the club should buy and sell, although Rodgers is part of the discussions that take place.

Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, have been careful on what they spend following the oversized transfer prices on Andy Carroll, Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson during Damien Comolli’s ill-fated tenure as director of football.

A total of £110m was spent, and little has been returned on the field for that hefty investment. Now, Ayre has offered an insight into the transfer policy at Anfield. He said: “We have a head of analysis, a head of recruitment, a first team manager and me.

All of those people are all inputting into a process that delivers what a director of football would deliver. What we believe, and we continue to follow, is you need many people involved in the process.

That doesn’t mean somebody else is picking the team for Brendan, but Brendan needs to set out with his team of people which positions we want to fill and what the key targets would be for that.

Since Rodgers came in, Barry Hunter, who was Manchester City’s former chief scout, has become a major figure, whilst Dave Fallows arrived as head of recruitment.
