Burnley match must-win for Wolves says Ward

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Stephen Ward insists that defeat in next Saturday's match with Burnley would mean relegation for the men from Molineux, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Wolves currently sit 22nd, in the relegation zone and level on points with both Barnsley and Peterborough United, who are currently outside the bottom three on goal difference. And the importance of next week's match with Burnley if Wolves are to avoid back-to-back relegations is not lost on the Dublin-born defender.

“First and foremost, we have to get a result and see where that gets us. It’s turned into an all-or-nothing game – win and have a good chance of staying up and lose and we are most likely relegated,” he said. "We have to get our heads on that and start preparing for it straight away.”

Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Charlton has left the Midland club deep in the relegation dogfight and Ward admits the bitter blow was “very difficult to take.”

“Coming in after the match we saw we’d still have been out of the relegation zone if we’d taken a point. It was two soft goals we conceded. The first was very scrappy and then when you concede so late it is always a massive disappointment.”

Dean Saunders' side's saw a recent upturn in results with Easter Monday's 3-2 derby win at Birmigham City their fourth win in five before a 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Hull gave them real hope of Championship survival. However, last week's defeat has ensured that the relegation fight will go down to the wire ahead of Saturday's crunch match at Molineux.
