Ipswich Town captain Carlos Edwards has said that young full-back Elliot Hewitt must seize his opportunities when starting in the first team, according to the eadt.co.uk website.

The 18-year-old made only his second league start of the season for the Blues in Saturday's 3-1 win over Birmingham which mathematically assured Championship football for Mick McCarthy's team next season.

Hewitt joined Ipswich from League Two side Macclesfield where he spent two seasons. And, despite finding starting chances difficult to come by at Portman Road, especially with the presence of loanee Richard Stearman from Wolves, Edwards has impressed during his brief stints in the Blues' line-up. And with Stearman's future as yet uncertain, Elliot could have a chance to secure himself in the Ipswich side.

“Every time he has been given his opportunity he has taken it with both hands,” said Hewitt's captain.

“I keep telling him that once he gets that opportunity, he must make sure that he keeps hold of his place, that’s the hardest part.

“It’s hard to get into the team but once you are there it’s more difficult to keep your position because everyone is breathing down your neck.

“Fair play to him, the last couple of games he has played, he has done remarkably well.”

Ipswich travel to Burnley for their last Championship fixture of the season on Saturday before Mick McCarthy can enjoy the whole summer to plan for the season ahead.
