Liverpool confirm lucrative pre-season clash
Liverpool FC will bank in £1m windfall after agreeing to take part in a post-season friendly in South Africa, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The Reds have confirmed they will take on ABSA Premiership side Ajax Cape Town on Tuesday, May 21st - just 48 hours after their final Premier League fixture against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield.
It will be the club’s first visit back to the county in 19 years after the Reds were involved in a friendly tournament in 1994, which included Aston Villa, Cape Town Spurs and Kaizer Chiefs.
The game will be played in the stunning 55,000-capacity Cape Town Stadium, which was built for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Liverpool are contracted to play a strong side in the fixture and are expected to bring the vast majority of their first team squad for the 12,000-mile round trip.
Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez is expected to be rested ahead of his participation in next month’s Confederations Cup in Brazil.
Liverpool’s chief commercial officer Billy Hogan said: “It will be fantastic for the club to return to South Africa almost 20 years.
“This visit is part of our off-season activity and shows our commitment to bringing the club closer to our fans all over the globe, no matter how far away from Anfield they may live.”
