Liverpool stalwart Carragher backs Chelsea for Premier League title
Jamie Carragher believes Jose Mourinho will lead Chelsea to victory in the Premier League in his first season back at Stamford Bridge, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Carragher retired from playing at the end of the prior campaign and will work with broadcaster Sky Sports as a pundit, taking a similar role with the television company as his old Manchester United adversary, Gary Neville.
And Carragher believes that as things stand, it is Chelsea who look best equipped to end the coming season at the top of the table. “If you put me on the spot and ask me right now, 'Who will win the league?', then I’d pick Chelsea,” Carragher said.
“I’d pick them because Mourinho is coming back, and also because they actually have a very good team - they had a really good team last season, with some fantastic players,” he added.
Carragher went on to say that while the likes of Robin van Persie, Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez attracted most of the headlines and individual awards, the Chelsea pair of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata were equally deserving of praise and, under Mourinho, could be the spur to deliver a first title since 2009/10.
But, Carragher continued, it is the manager who will really make the difference. “Mourinho is obviously a big factor,” Carragher said. “The players clearly respect him and adore him and I imagine they will go the extra yard for him. He will get the best out of that squad, they have a manager now they will fight for. He’s a special manager and he knows how to get results.”
The league title was the only club trophy to evade Carragher during his lengthy Liverpool career, the defender winning the League Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Cup and European Cup, among other prizes, but never the league crown.
