Newcastle Transfer Focus - Striking duo targeted by Pardew

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has confirmed his interest in strikers Loic Remy and Darren Bent as he still looks to strengthen a front line criticised for its lack of goals last season. Both players are looking for a way out of their current clubs and it seems Newcastle are readying themselves to make a move.

Bent has seen himself frozen out of the Villa Park first team picture and will be keen to play first team Premier League football, while Remy is available following the relegation of troubled Queens Park Rangers. Sky Sports, The Northern Echo and Daily Telegraph all report comments by Pardew confirming his interest.

Pardew said: “Both of those players are on our list. I make no bones about that. But they are under contract at other clubs. It's difficult, you have to be careful. It's nice for our fans to hear names, but I don't want to disrupt other clubs' preparations.

We have a list of four or five strikers who will push Papiss Cisse, Shola Ameobi, Adam Campbell and Yoan Gouffran because that will be important next season. Last year, I didn't think there was enough competition in that area for a Premier League team.

To land Remy it is reported the northern club will have to pay a fee in the region of £7m, with the Daily Mirror reporting that Pardew is willing to offer defender Steven Taylor along with £6m. Taylor has been told he can leave St James’ Park after not being guaranteed a starting place next season.

A move for Remy may come as a surprise to many Newcastle fans after the forward snubbed the club for QPR in the January transfer window. However, after making 14 appearances in which he scored six goals, he has shown that he can cope in the English game. He may also gel into the squad quicker than others given the already large contingent of French players among Newcastle’s ranks.

Starting Remy alongside Papiss Cisse would also see a pairing of strength and finishing with speed and flair, something that could excite the Magpies’ faithful. The former Marseille striker would give Newcastle’s frontline added creativity, and could see attractive attacking football being played with the likes of Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye supporting the attack.

Were the club to go for Bent, they would be acquiring a striker in a similar mould to Cisse - someone who can finish on instinct. However it remains to be seen if the club are willing to spend the mooted £8m fee on the Englishman who is three years Remy’s senior. The striker’s high wage demands may also prove to be a stumbling block in any potential move.

Sky Sports also suggest that a move for Manchester City’s Scott Sinclair may be a possibility. The former Swansea wide man has failed to make an impact at the Etihad Stadium and is being linked with a move to St James’ Park.
