Suarez should stay at Liverpool, says Arsenal legend Wright

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has said that rather than move to the Emirates Stadium, unsettled forward Luis Suarez should remain at Liverpool, while expressing concerns about the Gunners’ transfer policy this summer.

Suarez, 26, asked for permission to speak to Arsenal, after the North London side made an offer of £40m plus £1. Liverpool have insisted that they do not intend to sell Suarez this summer, with the club setting an asking price of over £50m, and captain Steven Gerrard making an appeal for Suarez to stay.

And Wright, among the leading goal scorers in Arsenal’s history, although admitting that Suarez would be an excellent signing for Arsenal, questioned Suarez’s desire to leave Liverpool.

He told BBC Sport: “I'd welcome him at Arsenal with open arms. But if I was Suarez, when you look at everything, it does seem strange he would want to go to Arsenal. I would give Liverpool another season.

If you look at Arsenal - not won anything in eight years, just challenging for fourth place, not really any players there who will make him say 'I'm going to play with him and him.

According to Wright, the controversy surrounding Suarez - who is currently serving a 10-match ban - is why leading European clubs such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have not registered an interest, leaving Arsenal with an opportunity.

Arsenal have struggled to make big-name signings in recent years, and Wright added: “It doesn't make sense buying Suarez for that money and not backing it up with other signings of the same stature.
