Bale keeping quiet about Tottenham exit, says Villas-Boas
Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas has revealed Gareth Bale has not spoken to his teammates about his proposed move to Real Madrid, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Villas-Boas added that Bale’s mental state is unknown at the club because of what the newspaper dubs the “silent treatment”. “His mental state nobody knows, because the player doesn’t speak. The only thing that we are able to see is the player arriving in and out of the training ground. It’s fine,” Villas-Boas said.
Bale is to miss Tottenham’s opening three games of the season - against Crystal Palace, Swansea City and Arsenal - as well as the Europa League play-off double-header with Dinamo Tbilisi due to a combination of a lack of fitness after a pre-season injury and the uncertainty surrounding his future as Madrid maintain their interest in the Wales international.
Villas-Boas added that everyone at the club knows of Madrid’s desire to sign Bale - with a world record fee mooted - but he pointed out that does not automatically mean Spurs will sell, and that Bale will be back to full fitness in the near future. “Obviously he is very far off regarding his fitness compared to the others,” Villas-Boas said.
“So it will take some time to bring him back to the level that the others are after six weeks. But the player is a super athlete.
“We’ve been very, very clear with everybody regarding the player and our willingness to hold onto him,” the Portuguese continued. “But obviously in football anything can happen in the end.
“However, this is a player we cherish a lot and who has helped us progress. Ideally we want to continue with him. We are aware that Real Madrid are interested. But it doesn’t mean that we are willing to negotiate about him.”
The latest offer from Madrid stands at over the world transfer record of £80m, to be paid in four instalments, with left-back Fabio Coentrao moving in the opposite direction. Bale’s contract would run for six years and be worth £180,000 per week.
