Man Utd warned by Everton not to expect cheap deal for Fellaini
Everton have warned Manchester United not to expect to sign Marouane Fellaini on the cheap now the contract clause allowing him to leave for a set price has expired, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Fellaini’s contract stipulated he could leave the Toffees for £23.5m but only before July 31, the newspaper explains, and Everton manager Roberto Martinez believes Fellaini’s suitors - United and Arsenal in particular - were waiting for the clause to expire, with the intention of making a lower offer for the Belgium international.
But Martinez insisted that rather than the price for Fellaini falling, now the clause is no longer active the fee has gone up. “This is not a situation where we are actively putting up players for sale because we need the money, it is definitely not the case at all,” Martinez said. “And when you are in a strong position financially you will never sell a player for less than the buy-out clause.
“Marouane has that clause in his contract, and on July 31 it expired. From that point on, the club has got complete control in every single transfer. The clause lets everyone know where they stand.”
United, managed by Martinez’s Everton predecessor, David Moyes, have been searching for midfield reinforcements all summer but have thus far come up blank. The Spaniard admitted he was worried Fellaini could be spirited away in the final days of the clause being in effect, but now is confident last season’s top scorer will remain at Goodison Park.
Also staying with Everton is Leighton Baines, another United target. However, Martinez revealed that Everton had received and rejected a final offer from Old Trafford for the England international, and trusts the word of Moyes that there will be no further bids.
“They made it clear it was their final offer,” Martinez said. “We would hope David Moyes feels that he owes something to Everton. If someone tells you it is their final offer, it should be their final offer.”
