Dawson calls for strong Tottenham start
Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson has said that the club cannot afford to make a slow start, the Independent has reported, with the north Londoners hoping to reclaim a place in the Champions League.
Dawson’s side were edged out by neighbours Arsenal for the crucial fourth spot last season, and manager Andre Villas-Boas has made some big-name signings this summer in an attempt to avoid a repeat. Brazil midfielder Paulinho and prolific Valencia striker Roberto Soldado are among those who have made the move to White Hart Lane during the close season.
Tottenham begin the new season on Sunday, away to newly promoted Crystal Palace, before a home meeting with Swansea City and the North London derby with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on September 1. Dawson believes that a good start will be crucial.
He said: “We didn't get off to a flyer last season like we wanted to. We showed strength, commitment and spirit to fight back, but if we had started better then who knows where it would have taken us? Hopefully this year we can. Hopefully it will be the start of a great year that has more ups than downs.”
